Girl Plays Piano For Her Grandfather With Alzheimer’s

Having a family member who is suffering from Alzheimer’s is hard and can be quite emotional. In later stages of Alzheimer’s, those with the disease may even forget people they love, like close friends and family members.

When a close family member, like a parent, grandparent, aunt, or sibling, forgets who you are, it can feel hopeless. But as one girl on Instagram is showing, there can still be ways to enjoy time with your loved ones – even when they don’t remember you.

Instagrammer Sheela Awe recently shared that her grandfather has late-stage Alzheimer’s disease and he doesn’t remember who she is. She could’ve given up on sharing special moments and making memories with him, but instead, she found a way to make it happen.

In the video, Sheela sits down at the piano in her grandfather’s house and begins to play. Shortly after she begins, her grandpa opens the door to the room and peeks his head in to see where the music is coming from.

He seems confused at first, possibly wondering who the strange woman is that’s playing his piano or where she came from, but he stops to listen anyway and doesn’t stop her music.

She wrote in the video, “Every 10 min he asks me who I am & where I’m from,” but noted that he “seems to be enjoying” the music – at least, she thought he was.

Toward the end of the clip, Grandpa gives her music a big thumbs up, confirming that he did enjoy the music! He then sat down to listen and eventually dozed off.

Sheela captioned the video, saying:

“My grandpa is 93 and has Alzheimer’s. He doesn’t know my name, where I live or who I am.

This is us, sharing a moment of happiness, where memory doesn’t have to play a part in the experience.

Life is too short y’all. Make space for love & cherish the present moment with your loved ones.”
