GreaterGood Reaches Out to Help Those Affected by the Mississippi Tornado

Late in the evening on Friday, March 27th, 2023, a tornado ripped through Mississippi and parts of four other states, flinging debris 30,000 feet in the air, killing at least 25 individuals, injuring dozens, and causing massive destruction to homes, buildings, crops, and more.

The monster tornado developed from a supercell storm, an uncommon but very destructive type of storm caused by warm, unstable air near the ground and wind that changes speed and direction higher up. This causes a separation between the storm’s updraft and downdraft, which increases its overall volatility and its potential to cause damage. Supercell storms are also known to be able to last longer than other storms before dissipating.

The tornado stayed on the ground for more than an hour and traveled for about 170 miles, destroying everything in its path. Many observers have dubbed it a “wedge tornado,” meaning it appeared to be wider than it was tall. Of course, a tornado’s size doesn’t dictate its destructive power – but it’s safe to say this particular beast was both powerful and destructive. Nighttime tornadoes also tend to be more dangerous because they’re hard to see coming.

Efforts to rescue people trapped in the rubble continued through the weekend, and work to rebuild the towns hit hardest will continue for months and even years into the future.

As of right now, three emergency shelters have been set up, but more help is needed. 26,000 people are without power, and many have experienced damage to or the complete loss of their homes, vehicles, and livelihoods. People are in need of food and water, warmth, and a plethora of other basic necessities that are currently in short supply.

Amidst this tragedy, GreaterGood, along with our non-profit partner, Greater Good Charities, is working hard to ensure that those who have been affected by this catastrophe, including pets involved in the natural disaster, will be able to survive in its aftermath.

Our team is working with emergency management crews on the ground to identify the current needs in order to fulfill them as quickly as possible. We’re also shipping medical supplies, food, pet food, animal care supplies, and other resources to Mississippi.
