Music to His Ears: Elderly Man Has Amazing Reaction When He Hears Old Songs

The power of music to evoke long lost memories is something we all recognize. Now music therapy is being used to alleviate anxiety and depression in aging minds. This footage from the documentary, “Alive Inside“, demonstrates the power of music to awaken sleeping parts of the brain. Henry, a nursing home resident who fails to recognize even his own daughter, starts moving his feet and arms to the beat and humming loudly when he hears jazz music from his era. When asked what music does for him, he replies: “It gives me the feeling of love, romance.” The Music & Memory project is a New York-based nonprofit that donates iPods to nursing homes and promotes awareness of music therapy.
