30 Ways Caregivers Can Care For Themselves!
Caregiving is a tough job and requires fundamental changes in the relationships between the patient and their caregiver. Unfortunately, caregiving is also often a thankless and stressful job.
We here at the Alzheimer’s Site want to remind caregivers that you are not forgotten and your efforts ARE appreciated, so we made this list especially for you so you can care for yourself too! We hope you take these tips to heart… being a great caregiver for the Alzheimer’s patient in your life is also about making sure you take care of yourself!
1. Take a bath
With bubbles, perhaps? Or scented epsom salts?
2. Relax and watch a movie
Take some time for yourself and catch that latest flick you’ve been dying to see.
3. Bring nature inside
Plants can really brighten up your home!
4. Go for a walk
30 minutes of walking a day can help reduce the risk of coronary heart disease, improve blood pressure and blood sugar levels, and enhance mental well being!
5. Spend time with friends
Don’t forget you have a life outside of being a caregiver. Get out and socialize.
6. Laugh often!
Try not to take yourself or your role as a caregiver too seriously. Sometimes, laughter can be the best prescription for a crummy day.
7. Get in a workout
Stay healthy and happy. Never underestimate the power of endorphins upon a tired body.
8. Listen to music
The right tune can put you in a great mood. Music also helps Alzheimer’s patients recall long-lost, beloved memories!
9. Never miss a chance to dance
Dance like nobody is watching!
10. Rest. You have done enough today.
Get some rest! Take a break and recharge your batteries, even if it’s just a short cat-nap!
